The trinacria is a female head with three legs that recalls the gorgons, monsters of Greek mythology with golden wings and characteristic snakes instead of hair. The three legs represent the extreme points of the island: Cape Peloro in Messina, Cape Passero in Syracuse and Cape Lilibeo in Marsala.
